부산 기장에서 우리 그릇의 아름다움을 찾는 작업을 하고 있는 도예가 신경균의 ‘장안요’(長安窯)는 1960-70년대 고려다완을 재현한 것으로 잘 알려진 부친 故신정희 선생의 전통적 기법을 계승 하면서 현대적 감각으로 자신의 작품세계를 만들어 가고 있는 작가이다. 특정한 가마에 머물지 않고 한국 남부의 산을 찾아 다니면서 새롭게 가마를 만들고 그 땅의 흙과 나무를 이용해 도자기를 제작하면서 작품의 폭을 확충해 가고 있다. 전통의 현대화와 생활 속의 아름다움을 담는 그릇에 대한 연구와 고민이 스민 작품 들은 장작가마와 나무물레를 통해 고집스럽게 만들어졌다. 빚는사람의 정신만이 머물수 있는 전통가마 안 에서 흙과 장작불의 혼들이 만드는 결과를 겸허히 받아들인 이 그릇들은 자연미라는 한국적 아름다움의 절정을 보여준다. 살가우면서 기품 있고, 실용적이면서 멋스러운 작품들은 전통의 맛이 우러나면서도 현대적인 생활에 적합한 쓰임새를 보여준다.

Gyung Kyun Shin incorporates his own modern interpretation as he utilizes the same traditional techniques inherited from his father, famed ceramicist Jung Hee Shin, who recreated Goryeo ceramics in the 1960s and 70s. Traveling through the mountains in the southern part of Korea, Shin expands the breadth of his pieces using the clay and wood unique to the area. Enduring the heat as the clay transforms into unique masterpieces, Shin’s ceramics radiate traditional beauty with a contemporary touch as they come out of the wood-fired kiln, a true display of Korea’s natural beauty.
